Make-Ahead, Storage, and Reheating
This casserole is easy to prepare in advance and holds up well as leftovers.
Assembling Ahead
You can assemble the full casserole up to a day before baking. Cover it tightly and refrigerate unbaked, then add about 10 extra minutes to the bake time since it will go into the oven cold.
Storing Leftovers
Store baked, cooled casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave, or cover the dish with foil and warm it in a 350°F (175°C) oven until heated through.
Freezing
Baked and fully cooled casserole can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat covered in the oven to keep the topping from drying out; uncover for the last few minutes to re-crisp it.
Serving Ideas and Pairings
Because the hotdish already includes protein, vegetables, and a starchy topping, it pairs best with something light on the side. A simple green salad, steamed green beans, or roasted seasonal vegetables round out the meal without competing with the creamy filling. Dinner rolls are optional but useful for scooping up any extra sauce. If you're planning a broader comfort-food menu, this dish fits naturally alongside other bakes in our collection of chicken casserole recipes, many of which use the same make-ahead and freezing approach.
